Soil Volume Calculator
Estimate soil or compost volume for beds, planters and raised beds.
Compost and soil can settle. Consider buying a little extra for levelling and topping up.
Notes and next steps
How it works
Estimate soil, compost or growing-medium volume for beds, raised planters and containers.
Estimating method: Base area = length × width. Volume = base area × depth. Litres = cubic metres × 1000.
Worked example
A 2 m × 1 m bed at 300 mm deep has a base area of 2 m² and a volume of 0.6 m³, or 600 litres.
Common mistakes
- Entering depth in metres when the field expects millimetres.
- Forgetting soil can settle after filling.
- Not allowing for existing soil level, drainage material or uneven beds.
