Lawn seed or turf calculator guide

Use lawn area to compare seed quantity and turf roll estimates before buying materials for a new lawn.

Quick answer

Use lawn area to compare seed quantity and turf roll estimates before buying materials for a new lawn.

How to do it

  1. Measure the lawn area first.
  2. For seed, multiply area by the seed rate in g/m².
  3. For turf, divide the waste-adjusted area by roll coverage and round up.

Worked example

40 m² at 35 g/m² with 10% allowance needs 1540 g, or about 1.54 kg.

Common mistakes

  • Using a seed rate meant for overseeding on a new lawn.
  • Not preparing the soil before sowing.
  • Forgetting birds, patchy areas and follow-up overseeding.

When this is not suitable

Do not treat any quick estimate as a final specification where safety, contracts, regulations or expensive purchases depend on it.
