How to calculate flooring packs
Estimate packs from floor area, waste allowance and the coverage printed on each pack.
Quick answer
Estimate packs from floor area, waste allowance and the coverage printed on each pack.
How to do it
- Measure the floor area.
- Add waste for cuts, mistakes and awkward rooms.
- Divide the waste-adjusted area by pack coverage.
- Round up because you cannot normally buy part of a pack.
Worked example
12 m² with 10% waste is 13.2 m². At 2 m² per pack, buy 7 packs.
Common mistakes
- Not allowing for cuts and pattern direction.
- Using the wrong pack coverage.
- Forgetting thresholds, alcoves or cupboards.
When this is not suitable
Do not treat any quick estimate as a final specification where safety, contracts, regulations or expensive purchases depend on it.
