VAT Calculator

Add or remove VAT from an amount and see net, VAT and gross values.

Try an example:
Use the VAT rate that applies to your item or invoice. This is a simple arithmetic calculator.
How it works

Add VAT to a net amount or remove VAT from a gross amount.

Formula used: VAT amount = net amount × VAT rate ÷ 100. Gross amount = net amount + VAT amount. Net amount = gross amount ÷ (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100). VAT amount from gross = gross amount − net amount.

Worked example

£100 plus 20% VAT becomes £120. A £120 gross price at 20% contains £20 VAT and £100 net.

Common mistakes
  • Mixing up net and gross prices.
  • Using the wrong VAT rate.
  • Rounding before the final total.
